Setting a keyboard function button to gamepad?

Hello guys.
I have been dabbling in the minimig core and was tring to get all the necessary buttons to work on a gamepad instead of plugging my keyboard and mouse to the mister.
I have managed to get the mouse emulated on the gamepad but i really needed to get the F5 keyboard key to be somehow defined on the gamepad either by a button or a combination of buttons so that i can bring up the save and load menu in games like Indy fate of Atlantis.
Is this even possible or is using a keyboard the only way to have this specific function buttons working?
