.VCD files

I have a huge collection of VCD files. Will these be supported too maybe in the future or should i start converting them?

I highly doubt the VCD format will get support any time soon, if ever. Your best bet is to convert to bin/cue or CHD format.

What is a .vcd file? I know what a VCD movie is, but I assumed that backups were standard ISO.

Even if this would be implemented, it looks like that this need a bios version (SCPH-5903) which unfortunately has never been dumped - as far as I aware of.

You are correct, i missed this one. It's a completley diffrent chip.

The Hxxx pins are for the Host (the 8bit CXP CPU), the Mxxx for the RAM chips,
the R/G/B pins are 24bit RGB video. Pin36 can be /CAS2 or MA9 (and, the VCD
daughterboard has alternate solderpads for one large RAM instead of two small
RAMs).

Pinouts are same as in CXP811P24 datasheet (which uses SPC700 instruction set;
that instruction set is also used by SNES sound CPU).

Used to divide the RGB DAC CLK by two. CLK comes from TDA.pin31, D and /Q are
shortcut with each other, /RES and /SET are wired to VDD, and Q goes to

I could probably write something that extracts and then compiles them into STR format and injects them into a CHD with the player. Put a couple of them on archive or get them to me somewhow.

What model has the SCPH-5903 BIOS? Seems weird in 2022 this BIOS is still undumped, especially if it is the key to VCD support.

Was a limited edition with white enclosure for the asian market. Maybe that's the cause for the still-missing dump.

Interesting, any idea how much they go for? This feels like something that should be tracked down and dumped.

Right but the core can't play VCD's in any format. If you convert them to STR videos and then inject the STRplayer into the bin/chd then it might work...

I think there's some confusion here. Apparently the OP has disc images of games in a format called VCD (Virtual CD). I also thought this was about Video CDs, but it seems that isn't the case.

OHHHH. Not Video CDs. The op has images that are in VCD "format". Yeah, I expect that will never be supported.

I found it a very good format and used it on my PS2.

fyi, the scph-5903 bios is dumped. I was able to find it with a little bit of searching online.

Oh, I didn't know it was dumped, when I looked the other week I just found notes saying it was still undumped. Does this pave the way for Video CD support or would it require more chips added to the already near full PS1 core?

The 5903 bios is 1,024 kb versus the 512kb of the other bios files.

From what I read, the bios checks to see if the disc is a properly pressed PS1 disc, and if not, then it loads the VCD playback functionality. The 5903 does have a daughterboard that assists with vcd playback. Maybe the actual mpeg decoding?

That would make sense, a bit like having an inbuild MPEG1 playing card. Is there any information on, or schematic, of this daughter board and what chips are on it?

Oh, nice, lots of info in there.

"So the VCD stuff is really very-self-contained, all the joypad button input and OSD video output is handled in the CXP chip. That's also making it fairly impossible to emulate the thing (unless the CXP firmware (and OSD character set) were dumped, too). "

Does anyone know if the OSD character set has also been dumped?

Personally I converted all my bin/cue images to CHD, which is fully supported by the PSX core.. Usually reduces the size of the images by 40-50%

Found the BIOS image, that one was tricky because the file name wasn't the one I was looking for. It's in archive.org, you can find it by searching for redump playstation bios, and can be distinguished from the others by the file size, which is about 390K compressed (1MB uncompressed as already noted).
