Is it OK to power 5v 260mA fan from Arduino header?

Unread post by 8bitAndy »

I want to run a 60mm 5v Noctua fan inside my MiSTer case, I was thinking of getting 5v from the Arduino header near the four slide switches. My fan is rated as using 260mA max current.
Can the Arduino header supply this much current?

It really depends on the overall current being drawn from whatever else is hooked up to the headers. The total expansion header current limit is 1A if 5v and 1.5A if 3.3v.

So the fan you are wanting to use will use about 1/4 of the current limit spread out across all of the expansion headers. (this table attached is from the de10-nano user manual and it is including the arduino headers in the spec)

Are you sure your 5V fan will ever draw as much? Maybe it's PWM enabled, rated @260mA because of its capability to turn at very high RPMs. However with the DE10, you won't ever see temps comparable to PC chipsets etc.

The popular Noctua NF-A4x10 5V fan most sellers provide for use with the digital I/O board (i.e. Arduino header connected), only needs 50mA.

It is a PWM fan. I have a small temp controller from ebay that I will use with it. My case doesn't have very good airflow and I notice dropped frames with some cores.
I don't have any IO board or other accessories, so it sounds like I have plenty of power reserve.

So you won't be using the third pin with the Arduino headers. That means the fan won't ever ask for so much juice :) In fact, you can run it @3.3V

I'm using a 5v 4-wire PWM temperature speed governor that is supposed to go full speed at 35c. I assume this is where the fan would draw 260mA.

Will this fan cause me any problems with just an 128sdram module installed? how much power does the sdram draw?
