Atari 800 CAR format? - Mine are not working

I have several ROMs that I am trying to use with the Atari 800 core, including the old stand-by-and-steady Star Raiders.
These are CAR files in the format used by the Atar800 emulator project and I know the roms themselves are good.
Is there another format that is used by this core instead? Every time I try to load ROM I get booted to the self test (or memopad) like the ROM is not present.
I have tried turning BASIC on and off in the emulation configuration itself.
