Names.txt not/no longer working as expected

Unread post by lagerfeldt »

I'm trying to figure out why names.txt isn't working as expected.

I'm editing the names.txt file manually.

However, it's almost random what works and what doesn't.

Example:

bankpanic: Bank Panic
jt1942: 1942
jt1943: 1943 - The Battle of Midway
jtgunsmk: Gun.Smoke
jtcps15: Punisher, The
jtsectionz: Section Z
SlapFight: Slap Fight
Tiger Heli Bootleg: Tiger-Heli (Bootleg)

Out of all these only 1942 and Tiger-Heli works. I've checked the spelling of the rbf names, everything checks out.

My expectation was that anything edited in the names.txt file would replace whatever the rbf used in the name field. But there seems to be no logic to when it's working or not.

1942 (Rev B) doesn't actually play any longer unfortunately. Perhaps Jotego will fix this soon.

Arcade cores are loaded through MRA files which can be downloaded at the same place as the RBF files. In names.txt, you then use the name of the MRA file instead of the RBF file.

EDIT: Thanks, I think I got it working now!

That also explains why some would work and others don't, i.e. in the case where the rbf/mra name are identical.
