Any Gotchas With This Kenowa 15" 4:3 Display?

Unread post by GreyAreaUK »

For the time being I've decided to stop mucking about with the CRT I have and invest, instead, in a better LCD.

I'd prefer to stick to a 4:3 display (I just like them) but the one I'm using is old and a bit crappy - it's an Acer, the resolution is 'only' 1024x768 and the screen brightness is definitely not what it once was!

Looking on Amazon I found this one made by Kenowa:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B24K11QC/

Description reads:

15 Inch PC Monitor
HDMI VGA Computer Display for Windows 7/8/10/11
LED 1400 X 1050 Screen
4:3 Aspect Ratio
60 Hz, 5Ms
75 * 75 mm VESA
Port with VGA, HDMI, BNC, AV, TN Panel (Built-in Speakers)

All for 90quid, which won't break the bank.

The resolution is unusual, which is what's giving me pause. Are there any obvious issues with this monitor? I'm not expecting it to be Sony Bravia quality :)

I'm intending a direct HDMI connection.

Many thanks.

That resolution is very non-standard and I can't imagine the TN panel is all that great.

I'd be much more inclined to pick up a Dell 2007FPB (1600x1200 IPS) for around £50~ on Ebay (you might just have to keep an eye out), you can also pick up an AX510/AS501 soundbar to go with it for under £15. Plenty of good feedback on YouTube on this monitor for this specific application too.

Yeah, think I'll give it a miss. Reading a US Amazon review indicates it's maybe a bit too flimsy.

Thanks for the recommendation of the Dell, but that's at 20" screen and I'd like it to be 17" or 15". 20" will be too large for my purpose.

Back to hunting for 4:3 LCDs :)

If the smaller size isn't an issue (9.7 inch), the 4:3 2K (2048 x 1536) iPad display that is popular here is really fantastic: https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/1005001689746001.html
Its IPS display has very nice colors and its high resolution works great with scanlines and shadowmasks. I was surprised by how much I like it.

I bought this stand for it recently: https://www.amazon.nl/dp/B09J8J4HTS Now I can twist and turn it in all directions, which is perfect for vertical arcade cores.

That’s a lot more tempting than I thought it would be. It’s technically not what I’m after (more of a 15-17” 4:3) but I’m tempted to get one anyway.

Thank you.

Happy to help. I was quite surprised by it. I had been on the fence to get one for a long time, but now I haven't even been hooking it up to any other displays.

I really like how portable this setup is as well, recently brought it to a local retro computer club and it got someone there interested in getting both the display and stand as well.

I also got 180 degree adapters for both the HDMI and USB-c connections (on Amazon as well), so it looks really tidy now.

EDIT: You might have seen the massive topic about this display here: viewtopic.php?t=3373

Many thanks for that. Having slept on it I’ve ordered one of the USB C models. £60-ish quid with tax, no idea if I’ll need to pay import duty on it, but we’ll see 🙂👍

Enjoy it! That is the exact same one I got. Briefly tried it attached with USB C to my laptop and it worked as a second screen as well.

I didn't have to pay duty, mostly haven't had to with AliExpress, but that might vary.

I’m hoping it’ll also make a good display for the rPi4 i take on holiday for retro gaming. Don’t see why it wouldn’t.

If it works as well as I’m hoping then I could easily see me buying another!

I expect that will work fine. That would make a great set to bring on a holiday.

Also, IIRC the resolution of this display is the maximum that the DE-10 can output, so that is also really nice.

Thanks! I'd also like to plug the USB-C into the wall, what kind of adapter does it need? I read that a 25w is around 2 amps, will this screen require more power?

25w is 5 amps at five volt, should be plenty. I can power it from my laptop over the same cable that sends the video signal.

oh ok, the chargers i saw on amazon showed 12v, not 100% sure how USB-C works, i'm guessing it can take multiple voltages? OR does the charger need to specifically be 5v?

I can't check it right now, but as far as I know it is five volt. I use a power delivery adapter for it, I don't think it does over five volts.

This is the PSU I’ve been using to power both my MiSTer and the iPad display: https://a.co/d/3IDJwsw
