Image keeps going blank for 1-2 seconds on Dell G2724D

Unread post by Fuzzball »

I know there is a similar topic to this but I didn't want to derail that conversation especially as that is an issue with a CRT and mine is with a LCD monitor.

I just got a Dell G2724D monitor. I was going to send it back as it had no headphone socket but it was too nice a monitor so decided at the last minute to keep it. However, I wish I had tested it with Mister first. The issue is that the screen keeps going blank for 1-2 seconds while using it with the Mister.

I am connected via HDMI. The monitor is a 2560x1440 monitor and I have the Mister set to 1920x1440 with the monitor set to 4:3 mode. The Mister video_mode is set to 1920,1440,75. The monitor goes up to 144hz on HDMI.

Anyone know what is causing the continuous 1-2 second blank screen?

I doubt the DE10-Nano has the bandwidth available to reliably drive that display at that resolution and refresh rate.

  • Try another high quality, high-speed HDMI cable.

  • Try reducing the refresh to 60Hz.

  • Set vsync_adjust=0 in MiSTer.ini .

YMMV and it could also be that the monitor won't accept that non-standard resolution.

Thanks I'll try that. A bit annoying as I only bought a high refresh monitor as I had read some cores work at 75hz. If I had known that was only at lower resolutions I would have saved some money and bought a 60hz monitor. I have no other use for a high refresh monitor. Live and learn.

The monitor definitely supports 1920x1440 though.

My Samsung S80A is listed as a 60hz monitor, but it displays 75hz from Wonderswan and 70hz from DOS just fine (it doesn't seem to like 50hz signals though). So you might not need to get a high-refresh monitor for cores like those.

Yes the Mister will fallback to 60hz mode for those cores on a 60hz monitor. However, I was buying a new monitor anyway so I was trying to buy one that would support the higher 75hz refresh rates. It's hardly the end of the world and now I have looked at 60hz monitor options I actually wouldn't have saved that much anyway.

For the record, setting the Mister to 60hz does seem to stop the screen blanking. I may buy a better HDMI cable at some point just to check 75hz is definitely not possible.

Nope, I have vsync_adjust=2 set and both the MiSTer's OSD and the monitor's info display shows the correct hz, and the monitor is displaying it without dropping frames or judder so it would seem to be an undocumented feature with this monitor.
