Impossible Smooth Scrolling at 50Hz?

Unread post by muteki »

Hi,

I'm running my MiSTer simultaneously on a Gigabyte G27Q (1440p, VRR) and a JVC TM-H150C with the following config for output:

Code: Select all

vsync_adjust=2
video_mode=12
video_mode_ntsc=12
video_mode_pal=1920,1440,50
vrr_mode=2

At 60Hz scrolling is butter-smooth, nothing to complain about. With 50hz content (SNES, Amiga, Amstrad) scrolling on the LCD compared to the CRT is choppy and looks quite bad.
I also tried video_mode_pal=1920,128,208,336,1440,1,3,36,186050 but I didn't make a difference.

I am missing something?
Thank you in advance.

Checked the monitor specs. The Freesync VRR range is 48-144Hz. So it should scroll perfectly fine for PAL 50Hz games. Do you have this AIM Stabilizer activated? Check the monitor OSD menu for any FPS related settings.

As an alternative to VRR, you can use the Aim Stabilizer technology, which uses backlight strobing at a fixed refresh rate to reduce perceived motion blur. It can’t be active at the same time as FreeSync and it reduces the monitor’s brightness while active.

Note that while Aim Stabilizer can improve motion clarity in fast-paced games, your frame rate should match the monitor’s refresh rate for the best performance and minimal strobe crosstalk (duplicate images).

I can confirm that Aim Stabilizer is not active.

I have an MSI monitor with a similarish range (48-165) and it also does 50hz content choppy. Freesync does show as active when it syncs to 70/75hz stuff (ao486, wonderswan). I also have a BenQ monitor that works perfectly smooth. It just seems like a bit of a crapshoot really....

Does that mean that it is exclusively monitor related? Could it be solved by software?

What happens if you try a custom resolution that's lower res to stay under the 210MHz pixel clock, but 100Hz refresh?

That doesn't work. Even at 1280x720 I can't force 100Hz refresh, it always falls back to 50Hz.
