Audio skipping issues using SSD

Unread post by Galaga_ »

Hello eveyone, hopefully this is the right place on the forum to post this, im having some audio skipping issues while using an ssd together with a SABRENT external hard drive enclosure, this issue is noticeable on cd based cores/games, I noticed it mainly on the psx core, this last few days I have been playing Final Fantasy IX and I notice the audio issues specially when changing from one area to another, while entering the menu or after pausing the game for some time. This only happens when the game is stored on the ssd, I tried running the core/game from the SD card and I have no issues at all.
I tried connecting the ssd enclosure on different usb slots of my usb hub and disconnecting everything except the controller and the ssd enclosure just in case I had too much stuff connected drawing power from my MiSTer and it did not solve the problem.

this is the USB enclosure im using

this is the SSD

this is the USB hub on my MiSTer

https://misteraddons.com/products/usb-hub-v2-1

and this is my power supply

Any ideas on what could be causing the issue and how to solve it?

Thanks in advance

Dont run the CD at anything but 1x and you will have no issues.

Hello! So I tried this during half an hour (1x CD speed) and the audio skipping still happened but a lot less (2 times in half an hour), with the added greater load times cause of lower CD speed. I trully have no idea on what could be the cause, why the SSD/USB enclosure causes this issue but the SD card (with CD speed set in original) does not cause it at all
Did anyone else have this same issue?

I've played I lot of FFIX, specifically the NTSC version in CHD format and can't say I've noticed any audio skipping. Which disc images are you using (CHD, BIN/CUE, PAL/NTSC, REDUMP etc.)?

Unfortunatly external drives via USB will result in increased access times, no matter how fast the drive itself is.
As the PSX core needs CD data in realtime, every random delay can lead to issues.
Therefore I cannot really recommend anything USB based.

Network drives however work fine and SDcard also.
