Apple II Core Joystick Issue

Hi,
Playing Ghostbusters on the Apple II core. The keyboard works, the joystick is set(using a USB NES controller I successfully use with the NES, SMS, Gameboy, Game Gear and PC Engine cores), but the joystick works very infrequently. Like maybe one press out of a hundred.
Went to go put my items in my car in Ghostbusters and trying to press anything on the controller after the initial presses, doesn’t work. Yet the keyboard still works and I can press 1-3 to flip the pages just fine.
